What is stillbirth? Why is it concerning? Stillbirth is the death of an unborn baby of 20 or more gestational weeks. 26,000 families face this needless tragedy each year in the US alone. Over 400 stillbirths occur in Minnesota each year. The cause is never known for most of these babies and they appear to be otherwise healthy. Most occur in the final days and weeks prior to their expected arrival - at a point of viability when they could have been saved had the risks to the baby been identified earlier.
